Dimitri André

Fang Byeri Nlo head reliquary Equatorial Spanish Guinea.

Elaborate coiffure with hole in the back. Shiny patina with varying colours
Height: 22 cm and on its base 32 cm.

PROVENANCE: - This Fang head was formerly in the private collection of Peter Westerdijk, who wrote several books on African weapons. It was purchased in 1958 at the Convent of the Brothers of the Holy Spirit, in Barcelona, by Suzanna Westerdijk. She is the mother of Peter Westerdijk.
After his mother’s death Peter decided to sell her collection of Fang statues.

AGE: early to mid-twentieth century.
The variations in the patina attest the authenticity as do the wood oxidation and quality of the carving. The hole at the back was used to attach magical substances. The figure was inserted in a bark container that was used to store the ancestor bones in the family shrine.
