Scythian Sword (Acinaces)

Condition: very good structural condition, professionally cleaned and conserved.

The acinaces sword (also akinakes or akinaka), from the Greek word ἀκινάκης, was part dagger and part short sword. It was used in the eastern Mediterranean in the first century B.C..

The acinaces was a straight, double-edged short sword that could be used for both stabbing and slashing. As it was small, easy to handle and weighed little, it was an ideal second weapon. The acinaces was used by the Scythian cavalry and spear-bearers. 

The sword is from a British collection.
