Most asked
Do I have to pay import tax to Catawiki?

Depending on your location and the price of the final bid, we may need to collect import tax. If so, import tax will be charged on top of the final bid and shipping costs for applicable orders. We then transfer the import tax to your local tax authorities, so you won’t have to pay that import tax VAT when your order arrives.

For example, if you’re charged import VAT at checkout, you shouldn’t be charged import VAT when your order is delivered or during the customs process.

I had to pay import tax twice?

If you paid import tax on your purchase twice (for example, to us at checkout and to your local tax or customs authority at the time of import) you can request a VAT refund on a completed order. Make sure you keep the proof of payment and contact us using the button below.

Import tax (VAT/GST) is collected in the following situations:

  1. Orders going to France

    1. Professional seller based and shipping from outside the EU

    2. Buyer is located in France

    3. Applicable to all final bid prices

  2. Orders going to the EU (including Northern-Ireland)

    1. Professional seller based and shipping from outside the EU

    2. Buyer located within the EU

    3. Final bid price €150 or under

  3. Orders going to Great Britain

    1. Professional seller based and shipping from outside of GB

    2. Buyer located within GB

    3. Final bid price £135 or under

  4. Orders going to or shipped within Switzerland

    1. Private or professional seller based in or outside Switzerland

    2. Buyer is located in Switzerland

    3. Final bid of any value

  5. Orders shipped within the EU or GB

    1. Professional seller based outside the EU or GB

    2. Buyer located within the EU or GB

    3. Final bid of any value

E.g. a seller in China with a warehouse in Germany shipping an order to a buyer within the EU.

  1. Orders going to Singapore

    1. Professional seller based and shipping from outside Singapore

    2. Buyer is located in Singapore

    3. Final bid price S$400 or under

These rules do not apply to all types of goods. For example, we aren’t required to collect import tax on excise goods.

An example of an order where we collect VAT

A €150 watch is sold by and shipped from a professional seller in Israel to a watch enthusiast in Italy. Shipping costs are €30.

✅ Professional seller based and shipping from outside the EU

✅ Buyer in the EU

✅ Final bid price €150 or under

Taxable amount = € 150.00 + € 30.00 = € 180.00

Import VAT (22%) = € 180.00 * 22% = € 39.60

We collect and transfer €39.60 to the Italian tax authorities.
