Artificial Intelligence at Catawiki

We use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve your experience, help keep our online marketplace safe and support our teams. Some AI tools interact directly with users, while others help our teams review information, prioritise cases, draft communications and identify patterns. AI may be used to support both user-facing services and internal decision-making.

We apply internal governance measures to support the responsible use of AI. Where our use of automated systems is subject to transparency or human-oversight requirements under applicable law, including the Digital Services Act and the AI Act, we provide the relevant information and safeguards. AI does not make final decisions that significantly affect users without appropriate human oversight. When we use third-party AI services, we take steps to limit the use of our data, including user data, to providing services to us, in line with our agreements and Data Protection & Privacy Notice.

This page may be updated periodically as we introduce new AI-powered features.

I am a (potential) Buyer

We use AI to help personalise your experience and improve how we show you relevant content. For example, AI may help tailor your feed or search results, generate estimated prices based on previous sales, or summarise object listings.

AI-generated summaries, enhancements and visualisations are for convenience only and may contain inaccuracies. Before placing a bid, review the original photos and the full listing details. AI visualisations are for presentation purposes only and do not confirm an object’s condition, authenticity, dimensions, provenance or other characteristics.

Here are some examples of how we use AI to support the buyer experience:

  • Personalisation: Tailoring your ‘For You’ feed and search results based on your interests.

  • Pricing: Providing estimated price ranges based on historical sales data. Any estimate is guidance only and does not guarantee an object’s value or selling price.

  • Content: Enhancing object descriptions and providing summaries for convenience.

  • Images: Providing visualisations for certain categories of objects (e.g. works of art) showing how they may look in a room or on a wall.

  • Risk Assessment: Assessing transactional risks to help prevent fraud, money laundering (AML), and other platform abuses across all transactions and interactions. This may include analysis of user-to-user messages within the platform.

  • Support & Analysis: Powering customer service chatbots and automated menus. AI also assists our internal teams in analysing support cases, complaints, and escalations to provide more consistent and timely responses.

  • Communication: Improving efficiency through AI-assisted email enhancements and translations of content across all communications channels.

I am a (potential) Seller

We may use AI to help you prepare a listing and to support our teams with seller performance and communications. AI may, for example, suggest titles or descriptions, or help enhance images in line with our AI Image Policy.

You remain responsible for the content you submit or approve for your listing, including any AI-generated or enhanced images. You must review your listing before the auction starts and make sure that the final description, photos and other listing information accurately describe your object.

Here are some examples of how we use AI to support the seller experience:

  • Listing Support: Enhancing images (in line with Catawiki’s AI Image Policy) and suggesting titles or descriptions. You must review and approve all AI-generated content before publication.

  • Auction Insights: Analysing data to suggest Reserve and Buy Now pricing.

  • Performance & Communications: Assisting internal teams with seller research, analysing performance, and preparing seller-facing summaries or support materials.

  • Dispute & Escalation Support: Supporting internal teams in handling seller-related questions, objections, complaints, or escalations to ensure fair and efficient resolution.

  • Customer Service: Powering AI-assisted answers and automated phone systems. AI-generated responses do not always receive human review.

  • Communication: Improving efficiency through AI-assisted email enhancements and translations of content across all communications channels.

If any AI content in respect of your objects is shown on the object page (such as buyer-facing summaries) or elsewhere, you are not responsible for that content unless you had a chance to review and approve it. You remain responsible for the quality and veracity of any AI enhanced or generated images that you submit yourself for your listings.

I am a Service Provider

We use AI tools to support business operations and manage our professional relationships, including:

  • Operational Efficiency: Summarising internal communications, emails, or meeting notes.

  • Legal & Compliance: Contract analysis, legal document review, and policy-based support for internal legal, triage, and compliance workflows.

  • Relationship Management: Risk or compliance assessment support in relation to supplier or service-provider relationships and AI-assisted negotiation support.

I am a Job Applicant

AI may assist in recruitment processes to ensure efficiency and consistency, including:

  • Interviews: Providing structured interview recordings and AI-generated summaries.

  • Process Support: Assisting recruitment teams in sourcing candidates, reviewing job applications, preparing interview materials, job descriptions, or structuring candidate evaluations.

  • Opt-out: Where AI-assisted recording is used, we will tell you in advance and explain any available alternatives.

AI is only used as a support tool for the recruitment of new colleagues and does not make the final recruitment or selection decision. This decision remains with the relevant human decision-maker.

Disclaimer

AI is a developing technology, so it can sometimes make mistakes or provide information that is not fully accurate. We use it to help our teams review information, identify patterns and prioritise cases. Whether a person reviews the output depends on how the tool is being used.

AI may also help with chat, phone and email support. Not every AI-assisted response is reviewed by a person. If something does not look right or you need further help, please message us through Catawiki.

We are committed to being transparent about how we use AI, especially where it may materially affect a user’s experience or an outcome.

Our use of AI is governed by our Terms of Use (or, where applicable, our General Purchasing Conditions)
