Photography submission guidelines

We carefully select photography submissions made by reputable and recognised photographers of the 20th century to the emerging talent of the 21st century to maintain high-quality and authenticity standards. We only accept authentic photographic works valued at €75 or more. Our experts review every submission to ensure bidders find rare, significant, and collectible pieces.

Follow these guidelines to maximise your chances of a successful sale.

What we accept

We’re looking for authentic, high-quality photographic works that appeal to serious collectors. To be accepted, your object must:

For all submissions:

  • Fall within our accepted categories:
    • Original photographs or photomechanical prints from the 20th or 21st century
    • Limited edition prints (in low quantity, in line with the photographer's profile)
    • Vintage press photographs marked or stamped prior to the 1990s
    • Photographs clearly attributed to the photographer (signed, imprinted, or stamped)
  • Be authentic and in good condition
  • Be clearly signedstamped or documented in catalogues, books or other publications
  • Meet the minimum expected value of €75
(You can combine objects in one submission to meet this threshold)

For recognised 20th century photographers:

For emerging 21st century photographers:

  • Made by a photographer that:
    • has their own professional website

    • has academic accreditation in photography (min. BA)

    • (if self-taught) has  a reputable list of exhibitions or awards, or is represented by a distinguished gallery

What increases your chances of approval:

  • Photographs by listed, historically significant, or culturally recognised photographers (see the list of desired photographers at the end of the guidelines)
  • Objects with provenance and documentation (e.g. publication references, agency stamps)
  • Vintage* and period** press images and promotional photographs prints

*Vintage: printed in the year or very close to the year the photograph was taken

**Period prints: dating around decade after the event (e.g. photographed in 1961 with the print made in 1969)

What we do not accept

To keep our auctions high-quality and trustworthy, we do not accept:

  • Unsigned, unstamped, or undocumented prints
  • Hobby or amateur photography without artistic or historical value
  • AI-generated photography without photographic merit
  • Print-on-demand works or digital-only versions
  • Single photomechanical reproductions taken from low value books or high volume portfolios, unless the individual value of a single print is over €75
  • Unofficial reprints with no verifiable provenance (e.g. photographer estate, heirs, gallery)
  • Books, portfolios, open edition prints still widely available on the market
  • Printer proofs or low-value photomechanical reproductions
  • Underage photographs and pornographic photographs

Getting your submission ready

1. Fill in all the details and write a clear description

When you submit an object, you’ll see fields to guide you in providing the right information, e.g. photographer, title, edition, year, etc. These fields ensure your listing is clear, searchable, and easy for bidders to understand.

Note: To determine condition, we use the PASS-CO Grading System:

  • Original State (OS) – A photograph in the condition of its original manufacture
  • Extremely Fine (EF) – A photograph that shows no wear, corners are complete and as issued, but emulsion may have minimal surface losses
  • Very Fine (VF) – A photograph that shows very minimal wear
  • Fine (F) – A photograph that shows some wear
  • Good (G) – A worn photograph
  • Poor (P) – An extremely worn and damaged photograph

Please also use the object description field to share:

  • Photographer background and artistic relevance
  • Full details about editionsignatureprinting process, and provenance
  • What is included/not included (e.g. framing, certification)
  • If the object has any flaws or condition issues

Tip: The more detail you provide, the easier it is for bidders to understand the value of your object – and the more likely it is to sell. Find here more tips on how to write a clear, accurate description.

📌 Examples of a well-written description:

"Silver gelatin print by Mary Ellen Mark, signed on reverse, printed in 1990, titled 'Amanda and her cousin Amy'. Comes with a certificate from Howard Greenberg Gallery."

2. Great photos matter

Photos are the first thing bidders see – so make them count! We recommend including at least 5 high-quality images that clearly show the condition and details of your object. This helps bidders make informed decisions and increases your chances of a successful sale.

Your photos should include:

For all submissions:

  • Full front image including all edges
  • Cropped front without frame
  • Full back image including all edges
  • Close-ups of signature, stamp, edition number, dates, annotations
  • Detail shots of materials and any condition flaws

For grouped submissions:

  • Group photos and individual shots

Tip: Use a plain light-coloured background, ensure the photo is well-lit and in focus, and avoid flash or colour filters. Never show the object being held or placed in a fictional background. Find here more tips on how to take professional photos.

📌 Examples of good vs. bad photos:

3. Additional proof of authenticity

We pay extra attention to ensure authenticity of high-value or signed photographic works to protect bidders and ensure a trustworthy marketplace.

For high-value objects (€500+):
We may request additional verification before approval:

✔ Proof of provenance (e.g. gallery invoice, certificate)

✔ High-resolution images of markings and condition

✔ Ownership documentation (if applicable)

For signed or limited edition works:

✔ Must include an authentic signature, stamp, or imprinted mark

✔ Other proof (e.g. inclusion in published catalogue) may also be accepted

X No unsigned or undocumented prints unless value and provenance can be demonstrated

Age Verification

Photographic works may include mature content and be subject to age restrictions in certain countries. As the seller, you are responsible for following all applicable laws in your country and the buyer’s, including any required age verification at delivery. Confirm with your shipping provider that an adult signature or equivalent age check can be applied where legally required.
