Upcoming Euros tournament and ‘blokecore’ fashion trend expected to boost sales of football shirts around UEFA European Football Championship
The last major football tournament was the World Cup in December 2022, during this time, sales of football shirts almost doubled on the Catawiki marketplace
Experts provide tips on how to style a football shirt
Amsterdam, 11 June 2024 With the UEFA European Football Championship mere weeks away, data revealed by Catawiki from the previous tournament suggests that there could be a football shirt resale boom on the horizon.
Football is the most played and watched sport in the world and events like the Euros and the World Cup have had massive impacts on the retro football shirt market in recent years. During the last major football tournament, the December 2022 FIFA World Cup, sales of football shirts almost doubled on the Catawiki marketplace. These included match worn shirts from historic games, to vintage replicas, but the most popular shirts during the tournament were vintage World Cup shirts, including Pelé, Maradona, and Messi signed jerseys.
Gustavo Radesca, sports memorabilia expert at Catawiki, says: "Football shirts have experienced remarkable growth on Catawiki over the past few years, particularly around tournaments such as the Euros. Sport, but particularly football, evokes strong emotions amongst fans around the world and wearing a football shirt, whether from a specific team or otherwise, plays into a timeless sense of nostalgia associated with the game that resonates not only across generations, but also with football fans and fashionistas alike.”
Experts predict a potential boom will also be exacerbated by the rising popularity of ‘blokecore’, a football-inspired style trend that combines British football culture and fashion, namely old club uniforms from the 80s and 90s. The look has been adopted by celebrities from Dua Lipa to Rihanna, and television shows like Apple TV’s “Ted Lasso” and “Welcome to Wrexham'' have also kept British football in the pop culture zeitgeist too.
Fashion expert Lorenzo Altimani suggested going for a high-low look, “pairing a football shirt with a tailored blazer or a trench coat, or combining it with vintage sneakers or denim.”

Tips from the experts:
Euros 2024, who and what to watch
In terms of what to look out for shirt-wise this year, here are Radesca’s top tips:
1. Country frontrunners
France, England, Spain. Germany and Portugal are the favourites to win the UEFA European Football Championship.
2. Players to watch
France’s Mbappe just announced his transfer to Real Madrid so he is a hot topic, and from England, Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden are the men to watch.
3. Rising talent
Spain’s Lamine Yamal is just 16 years old and is not only likely to be a star at the Euros, but will make an appearance at the Olympics too. Germany will also showcase some exciting new players, such as Wirtz and Musiala.
4. Last Dance
This could be the last dance for both Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Germany’s Kroos.
5. Catchy Kits
A few shirts gaining attention pre-tournament include Belgium’s shirt which matches with the comic character Tintin, France’s rooster shirt and the vibrant colours of Germany’s kit, which would complement the ‘Blokecore’ trend nicely.

Commenting on how to style a football shirt, Catawiki fashion expert Lorenzo Altimani, suggested:
1. High-Low Fashion: High-low looks are an easy way to blend the opposite sides of the style spectrum. Pairing a casual football shirt with a tailored blazer or a chic trench coat combines these elements in a thought-provoking way. You can also choose to combine a football shirt with high heels for that extra edge.
2. Athleisure: Athleisure as a trend has surged in popularity over the past years and it brings together comfort and style. Wear a football shirt with a baseball cap, beanie, layered over a hoodie, or coupled with a tennis skirt, to get that fully functional yet sleek look.
3. Vintage Style: Embrace the vintage. Styling football shirts with vintage sneakers and socks, vintage denim and retro accessories is the error-proof way to create an effortless but at the same time interesting look. Go overboard for a fashion statement.
