Banksy's Met Ball Will Be Auctioned on Catawiki from September 27 to October 6
Searches for Banksy increased by almost 80% last month following the appearance of many graffiti animals across London over the course of just nine days
Amsterdam, 27 September 2024 - After Banksy captivated the world in early August with his nine-day scavenger hunt of animal-themed graffiti across London, his work was once again thrust into the cultural zeitgeist. Now, Catawiki, the leading online marketplace for special objects, has announced the auction of Banksy's Met Ball, following an 80% increase in searches for Banksy last month.
Met Ball, authenticated by The Office of Pest Control, is crafted from an old police riot helmet and adorned with approximately 650 small mirrors, turning it into a shimmering disco ball. Originally purchased from GrossDomesticProduct, Banksy's own homewares brand, Met Ball is estimated to fetch between €155,000 and €200,000 at auction. This is a rare chance to own a piece that boldly addresses the tension between state control and personal freedom.
Catawiki’s Street Art Expert, Edouard Dupasquier, comments, “By reimagining a symbol of authority as a celebratory object, Banksy prompts us to reconsider the relationship between protest and power. In line with this provocative spirit, the Met Ball auction makes a remarkable piece of art available to a larger audience, offering a rare opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike.”
Catawiki has previously auctioned several notable Banksy works, including a coloured Trolleys print that sold for €20,000 and Rodeo Girl, which fetched €14,500.
The Met Ball auction will be live from 12:00 PM CET on Friday, 27th September, until 8:01 PM CET on Sunday, 6th October at this link.
