The only car from the historic procession celebrating Real Madrid’s Seventh European Cup is in excellent condition and looking for a new home
Madrid, 7 November 2024 - Real Madrid, recently named the best team in the world for the 2023-24 season, is about to see a piece of its football history change hands: the only Chrysler Stratus Convertible from Real Madrid’s legendary 1998 procession that is still functioning will be auctioned on Catawiki, the leading online marketplace for special objects. The auction closes on November 14th at 9PM, all the information is available on this link.
This vehicle is much more than a car; it is a witness to that unforgettable night of May 20, 1998, when Real Madrid defeated Juventus 1-0 with a historic goal by Predrag Mijatović at the Amsterdam Arena, breaking a drought of over 30 years without European titles and achieving the mythical Seventh European Cup. In the 6th European Cup title, in 1968, the car used by Real Madrid in the parade was a Chevrolet. This time around, on the occasion of the 7th European Cup victory, in 1998, the Chrysler convertible carried three crucial figures of that feat: President of Real Madrid Lorenzo Sanz, Captain Manolo Sanchís, and Coach Jupp Heynckes. In a legendary parade from Barajas Airport to the iconic Cibeles Fountain, the team’s heroes cruised in the Chrysler before a crowd of over 500,000 fans who welcomed them in one of the most emotional celebrations remembered in the streets of the capital.
“This Chrysler Stratus convertible is not just a classic car; it is a living symbol of the eternal glory of the Seventh European Cup. For collectors and Real Madrid fans, it represents the passion, pride, and history of the world’s greatest club. Now, thanks to Catawiki, we are making it possible for sports fans worldwide to have the chance to own this unique jewel”, commented Franco Vigorito, cars expert at Catawiki.
Today, this Chrysler Stratus Convertible is still in circulation, being the only vehicle from that procession that has endured over time. In 2023, with 179,000 km, significant mechanical improvements were made: engine, gaskets, belt, water pump, thermostat, hoses, oil, and filter. In 2017, the electric roof motor was repaired, keeping it as functional as the day it drove through the streets of Madrid. The car is estimated to be worth between €14.000 and €17.000.
