Classic motorcycles still power our dreams: from the mythical Harley Davidson to the classic Vespa, two-wheelers hold a prime place in the hearts of collectors. What are the trends in this market? How to best sell and buy at auction? Our expert in classic motorcycles answers some of our questions and gives some advice.
By Julien Galoin, expert in classic motorcycles
Q: What makes the value of a classic motorcycle on the internet?
Julien Galoin: The value is an interesting variable in a sector where demand is often higher than supply for many models. It depends on the mechanical and aesthetic condition of the motorcycle, its history, its rarity and the demand fluctuations since its release. The demand for 1960-1970s models is currently on the rise (it must be a generation thing!) but older models are still actively sought-after by collectors throughout Europe.
Q: What to check of before before bidding?
J.G.: With sellers from all over Europe, we endeavor to check and complete the description details for each vehicle, whether historical, mechanical or administrative. It is nevertheless necessary to ensure that the model can be registered in the country of your choice, and at what cost. Although changes in registration are often straightforward within the European Union, some brands or models can be problematic: our role is also to inform and advise our clients about the procedures.
Q: What are the "trendy" brands?
J.G.: Harley Davidson, Vespa and the beautiful English (Triumph, BSA, Norton), followed closely by their inexhaustible German competitors of BMW. Italian brands are also well represented. And let's not forget the timeless Solex with fans all over Europe.
Q.: What would be your good plans to come?
J.G.: Cycles and mopeds from the 1950s to the 1970s, hold a large share. Pleasant for small trips, or as beautiful decoration, often in addition to a large cylinder, they are a "pleasure" investment for an affordable price ranging from 500 € to more than 5 000 € for an exceptional model ... Look out for our dedicated auctions in the coming weeks with Motobécanes, Kreidler, Puch and other Italian brands.
