The sci-fi movie experience gets better and better as monsters, aliens and special effects continue to develop, becoming more detailed and more lifelike. Films such as 'E.T.', 'Alien', and 'King Kong' featured some magnificent monsters and one very lovable extra-terresterial. As believable as some of these characters are, they were born from the imagination and the mastermind behind them was none other than Carlo Rambaldi. This week his art landed at Catawiki and you have the chance to own a piece of film history. Keep reading to get to know this great contemporary artist and to discover which piece of art is up for auction.
The Makings of a Mastermind
Carlo Rambaldi was born in Vigaraino Mainarda on the 15th of September 1925. During his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, he developed a passion for the skeletal and musclular structures of the human body as well as a love of electromechanics. After graduating from their painting program, he combined his passions and put them to work. His first film creation came to life in 1956 when he built the sixteen-metre-long, fire-breathing dragon, Fafner, for the film 'Sigfrido', directed by Giacomo Gentilomo. In 1963 special effects became a full-time career for Rambaldi and he went on to bring fantastic creatures to life in a plethora of films.

Magnificent Monsters
The Italian artist is especially famous for having created the animatronic alien for the film 'E.T. the Extra-Terresterial', the massive gorilla-like monster arms for 'King-Kong' and the mechanical creature head for 'Alien'. Steven Spielberg said, ''It is thanks to artists like Carlo Rambaldi that I can show my dreams on screen and make you participate in all of them. Thank you Carlo, you are a genius with the heart of E.T. ". Rambaldi's famous collaborations have earned him three Oscars for Best Special Effects.
