We are proud to announce that together with artist Kev Munday and one of our wonderful sellers, VintageDeluxeShop, we are bringing you a very special art auction. The auction will start on the 20th of October and close on the 29th of October. During this time, Vintage Deluxe will be opening the doors of their gallery in Maastrict, the Netherlands, and exhibiting Kev Munday's pieces that will be in the auction. Kev will also be there on the 28th and 29th to meet you and discuss his art. We spoke with both of them and asked them to tell us a bit more about this unique opportunity and what we can expect in the upcoming auction.
First of all, tell us about yourselves. Who is Kev Munday and what is Vintage Deluxe?
Kev: I'm a British artist based in Basingstoke. Through my colourful work I want to make people smile and think at the same time. In 2016 I was named as 1 of 5 British artists to invest in by 'The Telegraph'.
Hubert: Vintage Deluxe is my vintage, antiques and design store in Maastricht, established in 2014. Since 2015, I started concentrating on offering artists a platform. Since then the fine arts collection has evolved and Kev Munday’s work was added in July 2017.
Can you tell us a bit about your upcoming art show at Vintage Deluxe? What can we expect to see there?
Kev: Hubert approached me to exhibit my work during the auction and I'm really excited about it! 20 original artworks will be available to see for interested art collectors.
Hubert: Because Kev has pieces up on Catawiki every week he has built up a lot of collectors in the Benelux, Germany and France. As Maastricht is quite central to these countries, collectors will have the opportunity to have a look before placing a bid. An important aspect is that Kev will be in the shop on Oct 28 and 29, giving collectors the opportunity to meet him.
Let’s talk about your work Kev. How would you describe your style and why is your art collected?
Kev: Positive, vibrant, colourful and fun. I think my work is collected because it makes people happy and every piece is unique, but you would have to ask my collectors.
How did you come to Catawiki? And why Catawiki?
Kev: I first started selling my art on Catawiki's Art auctions in 2014, after noticing some other sellers offering my artwork on there. I initially liked it as a platform to open up my work to a new audience, and now I have quite a big audience following my lots on there every week as well as new collectors being introduced to my work through the site weekly.
Hubert: I first started using Catawiki to sell antiques and other items. Shortly after I started offering art, I was approached by Catatwiki to host an exhibition alongside a themed auction. This way potential buyers could see the lots before bidding. The first auction I hosted was with Hayden Kays, in 2016. This was a huge success and a lot of fun. The positive reactions and outcome of that auction gave me a reason to try it again. At the start of 2017 I was thinking of adding some of Kev’s works to my collection and thought a good way to start was to ask him if he would like to do a show in Maastricht. I believe the body of work he has made for this show will pleasantly surprise everyone who comes to see it.
So why is this auction so special?
Kev: For the auction, I have produced 20 original artworks, all unique and hand-painted. There are some classic pieces in my signature style, plus some more experimental works that I hope will go down well with new and old fans.
Do you have a favourite piece in the upcoming show?
Kev: Merriment
Hubert: Jungle Tower
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Kev: Thanks for reading and I hope to see you in Maastricht on October 28th and 29th!
