What is it about vintage advertising signs that makes them so sought after? Perhaps there’s something inherently ‘cool’ about the way they look - with their rusty edges, catchy slogans and bold colours. Hanging on the wall, they are retro time capsules - forever a rustic reminder of a time that is no more. Whatever the reason, vintage advertising signs are hot under the hammer, and popular amongst bidders. Looking to sell? Stay tuned as we guide you through how to find out if you could make money selling your vintage advertising signs at auction.
The Most Expensive Vintage Advertising Signs Sold on Catawiki
Every week, Catawiki auctions vintage and enamel signs at our Advertising and Enamel Signs auction. And as you will soon tell from the following list, there’s big bucks to be made from selling! Let’s take a look at some of our most popular items to have sold at Catawiki...
5. Hercules Cycles - ca. 1910-1920 - €1,799
Quality and strength. That’s certainly two words to describe this bold and brilliant sign. Well worthy of a wall, there’s a certain pride which seems to radiate from the image. This was a heroic win for the lucky buyer.
4. "BYRRH" - circa 1900 - €1,900
When a sign from the 1900s is 100% original and in such great condition, as this one is, it’s easy to see why one might sell for almost €2,000 at auction. Byrrh is a richly aromatic fortified red wine containing quinine which was popular in the late 20th century. With the colourful bunches of grapes pattern framing the text, this sign is as delicious as byrrh itself!
3. Minerva - 1929 - €2,200
From 1902 until 1938, Minerva was a Belgian luxury automobile manufacturer. Since the company closed down in 1956, to own this plaque is to own a little piece of history.
2. Sandeman Port & Sherry - 1951 - €2,800
This iconic logo has stood the test of time and is very recognisable amongst wine and sherry fans. This original edition sign is therefore a hot ticket at auction. Sandeman signs are certainly very popular, as our number 1 top selling advertising sign proves...
1. Sandeman's Port - 1980s - €3,356
This sign was discovered by the seller mounted on a fence in a pub garden, overgrown with ivy. It was uncovered only because the owner wanted to renovate the fence, and so was very surprised to come across this hidden treasure. It just goes to show - who knows what you might stumble across which could be of value!
Is Your Antique Sign Worth Money?
There are a few things to consider when working out the value of your antique or enamel sign:
1. Condition
Is the main design and logo worn or faded? Many vintage signs have bullet holes from being shot at. Others are often rusty or cracked from exposure to outdoor weather. This could influence the value.
2. Visual Appeal
Is the sign the type of thing you would want to hang up in your own home? Signs that are quirky, comical, appealing or particularly interesting are more likely to be worth more at auction.
3. Scarcity
Is the sign special edition or unique? For example, a brand like Coca-Cola made many advertisements, but the most valuable ones are usually the most rare.
