Is there anything better than watching your idols create an artwork live and then owning that very same work of art? This dream will become reality for comic enthusiasts visiting Lucca Comics & Games, one of the most important events for games and comics in Europe, which takes place from the 1st through the 5th of November (2017) in Lucca (Toscany) in Italy. We're excited to be the main sponsor of the Area Performance and we're also offering up the works from the artists’ live painting at the event early next year. Read more about this exciting opportunity below.
The Area Performance was born in 1998 from Rick Berry’s idea to propose a live artistic partnership with Phil Hale and Gerald Brom, as a part of the original work exhibition curated by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini and Roberto Irace. As the editions went by, the Area Performance became a permanent part of Festival of Lucca, offering 4 days of nonstop performance with dozens of artists taking turns creating their artworks live, in front of their audience.
True superstars of the field will be among the guests of this festival. The audience of Lucca Comics & Games will have the chance to enjoy the much acclaimed illustrators in many live painting sessions inside the Area Performance. In particular, there will be two permanent arenas of live painting this year: the historical one in Padiglione Carducci, and the new area in Padiglione di Piazza Napoleone, point of reference for comic lovers. Italian and international artists will offer unforgettable performances while creating unique artworks.
Karl Kopinski, John Howe, Michael Whelan, Gabriele Dell'Otto, Heather Theurer, Paul Bonner, Jesper Ejsing and Paolo Barbieri are just few of the names that will be performing in the 2017 edition of Lucca Comics & Games. The artworks created for this occasion will be put up for auction live on the last day of the event. Proceeds from the auction will be distributed to Emergency, Comunità di Sant’Egidio, and the Pediatric Department of the Hospital in Lucca. In 2016, Lucca Comics & Games Area Performance collected more than €32,000, and this year they hope to top that!
For the first time, Catawiki is partnering with Area Performance and everyone's excited about the unique opportunity to auction off the works that will be created during the live painting sessions at Lucca. During the first months of 2018, this partnership will be followed by an online auction marathon at Catawiki that will involve the artists at the event. Some of the works created in Lucca will be included in this online auction marathon at the beginning of 2018, giving you the opportunity to take home your favourites!
For those who won’t be able to join in in person, we've planned a very unique auction simultaneously with the event, featuring original plates of great Italian illustrators including Hugo Pratt, Jacovitti, Crepax and Serpieri. The auction will close on the 5th of November, so don't delay! Visit the auction now for your chance to take home an original piece of comic art.
Additionally, if you want to offer up original comic art from your own collection, you can do so by registering as as seller.
