What do you picture when you think about ‘luxury goods’? Classic cars? Watches? Jewellery? Luxury goods make us feel special, indulgent and excited, usually because they are rare, exclusive or particularly important. And certain luxury goods can hold their value, or even gain in price after you’ve bought them. Bringing the right objects to auction could be a great way to make some extra money, and here at Catawiki, we make it quick and easy for you to do so. Here are 5 luxury goods that you can easily sell and make money with online.
1. Watches
Luxury watches are timeless, and thus will always be highly sought after by buyers. And of course when it comes to reputability and value, there can be no other brand than Rolex. Models like the Deepsea and Daytona are expected to rise 35% in value over 5 years time, and could even rise by 67% in value over the next 10 years. The return on the Submariner model is expected to be at least €2,100 in the next 10 years, making it a great investment as well. Other brands that are bestsellers are Patek Philippe, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Panerai or Cartier.
2. Artworks
Although art has traditionally been sold through galleries and auction houses, selling and buying art online has become increasingly more popular. The average return on the auction market is 7% per year, but this will vary according to the type of art. Keep in mind that original artworks are more favourable than copies and established artists tend to sell better than those who are unknown. It won’t be hard to sell your Picasso or Banksy, whereas it is much harder to auction off your local artwork. When putting your work up for auction, take into account the status of the current market, and what the contemporary taste is. Street art for instance is very popular on the auction market right now.
3. Classic Cars
People just love classic cars right now. The market came to a rise when the baby boomer generation had enough money to spend and started to long for vintage products. The prices of classic cars have been rising for years. In some cases, cars have become a better investment for buyers than gold! In only one year's time, a classic car can offer investors a 28% return. But even better, after a period of ten years a classic can offer a return between a whopping 100% and 600%. The Porsche 911 RS Carrera 2.7 for example was worth €73,000 in 2004, but 10 years later the same car was already worth €565,000. Other cars that are skyrocketing investments are the Aston Martin DB5, the Porsche Boxster, the Alfa Romeo Spider and the ever-popular Fiat 500 (original edition). The high demand at the moment makes it easy to sell your classic car online.
4. Designer Handbags
Since fashion is constantly changing, fashion products are not always easy to resell. There are some exceptions however, because certain classic pieces will only become more popular as time goes on. This is definitely true for designer handbags. For example, the Hermès Birkin Bag is a guaranteed bestseller. Its price can rise up to €190,000, with a gain in value of 14.2% each year. But it won’t be difficult to sell classic bags by famous brands such as Louis Vuitton and Chanel either; most of these bags have risen in value at least 200% since their launch.
5. Wines
Exclusive fine wines are true collectors' pieces and therefore serious auction material. Buying and selling rare wines can be easy when you wait for the right moment. Fine-wines are not a quick investment, although they still gained 20% value on average in 2017. But to be able to sell your wine more easily, it is recommended to wait at least five years. The best performing wines at auction have increased 150% value in the last five years, with the most popular wines being the Petit Mouton by Chateau Mouton Rothschild from 2011, Krug’s Vintage Brut from 1990 and the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s Grands Echezeaux from 2006.
