50 Year Old Whisky at Auction

It was back in the spring of 1966 when a particularly exciting single grain whisky was distilled in a sherry hogshead barrel in the Highlands of Scotland. 50 years later, only 25 bottles of this very fine and complex Scotch have been produced and are now available to a very select few. But what is the whisky? And how can you be one of the lucky owners? From 9th Feb (2018) we are excited to have one of the bottles of this very exclusive Donatella Cask 50 whisky at auction. Collectors and enthusiasts will also be pleased to hear that the bottle is being offered without a reserve price, making this a fantastic opportunity to add a truly special whisky to your collection. Read on to find out more about the distillery and how this bottle came into being...

The Story Behind the Distillery

Donatella has been officially recognised as a brand since 2016, under the supervision of  owner and spirits designer, Matthias Steinmetz. However as early as 1885, Matthias’ ancestors had been importing and refining high-quality spirits from all over the world. ‘This tradition dates back to the year 1885 when my ancestor Edward Palm laid the groundwork for it in New York City.’ It’s this dedicated family tradition and the subsequent personal attention to every bottle of whisky produced which makes Donatella so exciting. ‘My love of whisky and spirits has always been there - I grew up with it. My ancestors partnered up with a distillery in Scotland to create our own flavoured spirits in 1966,’ Matthias tells us. It was only after a family member passed away a few years ago that Matthias took over the tradition and decided to have the Cask 50 whisky bottled.

Only 25 bottles of Donatella Cask 50 whisky exist

Why is Cask 50 Whisky so Special?

Because only 25 Donatella Cask 50 whisky bottles exist, it’s the scarcity of the drink which makes it so exciting. This is the first and only bottling, and thus the whisky cannot be reproduced. To date, 10 bottles have been sold to VIP customers in Dubai, London, Munich and Tokyo. And Matthias also reveals; ‘One bottle found its place in my private collection and as far as I’m concerned it will stay there forever.’

The whisky dates back to my ancestors who partnered up with a distillery in Scotland in 1966. This whisky has been aged for 50 years.

Enjoying Cask 50 Whisky

So what does Cask 50 whisky taste like? ‘It’s very fruity and slightly sweet, with a hint of sweet spices and an aroma of light oak,’ Matthias tells us. ‘It has a strong and dark amber colour, and even with its cask strength, the Cask 50 feels very soft and amazes with its lovely aroma.’ Its cask strength is 49.5% Vol and is non chill-filtered. All these features combined makes for an effortless and divine sipping experience, which only a lucky few will be able to enjoy. Here’s your chance to be one of them…
