  • Expert's Choice 2: Nitia sur le pont dans le jardin de Claude Monet
  • Blanche Hoschedé Monet - 1927 - oil on canvas
  • Expert's estimate: €55,000 - €65,000

Blanche Hoschedé Monet (1865-1947) was a French painter who was both the stepdaughter and the daughter-in-law of Monet. In 1882 Claude Monet rented a summer house in Pourville and Blanche started to paint next to him. Strongly influenced by his pictorial touch, it is sometime difficult to distinguish Monet's paintings from Blanche Hoschedé's ones. Nature is Blanche Hoschedé Monet's biggest inspirations. She used to paint fields along the Risle river, with its poplars and pines. Most of her artworks were executed outside, in Giverny and around Rouen where she settled with her husband, Jean Monet, Claude Monet's son, who married her in 1897.

From 1927 to 2009, many exhibitions of this artist took place in France and worldwide.

  • Expert's Choice 3: Ecce Homo
  • Attributed to Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and studio - 1665-1670 - oil on canvas
  • Expert's estimate: €200,000 - €300,000

This ‘Ecce Homo’, attributed by Professor Enrique Valdivieso to Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and his studio, is a magnificent example of the technique and style of the Sevillian master. Created during his mature period, this painting shows Murillo's expertise in capturing the delicate muscles of the torso with his brushstroke, using colour and light to create subtle contrasts that give shape to the figure of Jesus Christ. Playing with this contrast, the artist succeeds in masterfully capturing the different textures, from the softness of the skin to the roughness of the strings that join the wrists to the harshness of the crown of thorns.

Murillo is able to capture that moment of profound introspection and emotion contained in the face of Jesus on the canvas, showing precisely the moment when, with his gaze on one side and downwards, he has accepted what will finally be his destiny.

  • Expert's Choice 4: Lo non ho mani che mi accarezzino il volto
  • Mario Giacomelli - 1987 - gelatin silver print
  • Expert's estimate: €4,000 - €5,000

Mario Giacomelli was a self taught photographer. His work is characterised by strong compositions and strong contrasts. In the series 'I have no hands to caress my face' Giacomelli shows the world of young priests. In his interpretation of showing the cloistered life of these priests he touches upon the childlike trance of these priests, dancing in the snow. This is Italian humanist post war photography at it's finest.

Amongst others Mario Giacomelli's work can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Turin, the Metropolitan, New York, Museum of Modern Art in New York and the SF Moma.

  • Expert's Choice 5: Easington, County Durham, 1976
  • Graham Smith - 1995/96 - gelatin silver print
  • Expert's estimate: €3,000 - €4,000

Graham Smith, who was particularly active in the 70s and 80s shows the dark places of industrial England with a very romantic view. In this striking image we get an insight into the working-class areas Smith focussed on in his typical English post-war social documentary photography. As noted to the current owner and seller of this piece on the back of the frame, Smith mentions "One of my favourite pictures.... Hope it gives some good feeling." And a good feeling it gives! Graham Smith's work can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

  • Expert's Choice 6: Anna with Self Portrait
  • Wolfgang Alexander Kossuth - 2004 - pastels on paper
  • Expert's estimate: €3,000 - €4,000

Eclectic artist born in Germany in 1947, he is largely known as a sculptor, violinist, orchestra conductor and director of the Scala Opera theatre in Milan in the 1970s. The contamination between visual arts and music is expressed in his paintings through the representation of movement, where the naturalism of anatomical detail transcends into rhythm.

  • Expert's Choice 7: Piatto Triangolare
  • Arnaldo Pomodoro - 2003 - metallic stoneware
  • Expert’s estimate: €1,800 - €2,000

Masterful Italian sculptor who taught in Stanford at the end of the 1960s, while being in contact with the Beat generation and the great American artists of the time like Rauschenberg and Rothko. This work well represents his use of the tension between materic elements and pure abstraction.
