This is easily the most recognisable bag in the world. The inspiration for its unique design came to Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas in 1981, when he met a woman sitting next to him on a flight. The woman was carrying her belongings in a straw bag, and started to complain that nicer bags were simply never big enough to carry all her things. The woman’s name was Jane Birkin, and three years later, the Hermès Birkin bag was released. It continues to be one of the most iconic status symbols of all time.
The ‘2.55’ flap bag is one of Coco Chanel’s most innovative creations. Named after the year of its release in 1955, the bag’s innovative design comes from the inclusion of shoulder straps. Before the birth of this bag, the only designs available were top-handle totes or clutches bags. The Chanel ‘2.55’ bag is still one of the brand’s best-selling bag styles to this day.
We have Audrey Hepburn to thank for the Speedy 30. The Speedy was created in the 1930s, when Audrey Hepburn asked Louis Vuitton to make a smaller version of the ‘Keepall’ travel bag. Once such a well-known and well-loved star was seen carrying the bag, it became extremely popular and Louis Vuitton decided to put it into regular production, creating 4 sizes in total. As one of the brand’s signatures design, the ‘Speedy’ is still carried today by celebrities all over the world.
Bamboo on a bag? Although this Gucci bamboo bag design looks extremely elegant and unique, the inclusion of this unusual material was not for aesthetic purposes. Designed in post-World War II Florence in 1947, the introduction of bamboo was a response to a shortage of expensive materials rather than a design choice. However, over the years, the bamboo became one of Gucci’s signature designs and has since been used as a distinctive material in the brand’s items from watch straps to jewellery.
In 1995, the French First Lady Bernadette Chirac gifted a Christian Dior stitched leather handbag to Diana, Princess of Wales. The Princess instantly fell in love with the design and a fashion legend was born. Diana was repeatedly photographed with her tote bag, and so Dior renamed it the 'Lady Dior' bag in her honour. Since then, the bag has been one of the brand’s best-selling pieces on the secondary market.
Surprisingly, when the Celine luggage bag was first launched, it didn’t fly off the shelves in the first season. But as soon as the ever-popular Olsen twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley, were seen carrying the bag on the streets of New York City, the tote completely sold out overnight, with a six-month waitlist. Nowadays the bag is available in a great variety of colours and materials and has conquered a place amongst the most iconic and sought-after bags of all time. This is your chance to own a beautiful brown leather version so don’t miss out!
