A rare and early BSA Gold Star 500 was recently sold on our online Motorcycle auction where it reached the highest sum ever paid for this specific model. A real two-wheeled myth, as one of the fastest production motorbikes of its time, the Gold Star became especially popular after the war. Fast, reliable and relatively affordable, it found many adepts in clubman racing. Its innovative engine, with twin pushrods operating double coil springs and overhead valves, was designed by Val Page.
Although BSA never officially competed in road races, it produced very sporting single-cylinder motorcycles that were broadly admired. In June 1937, riding a modified 403 cc OHV Empire Star, W. L. Handley won a Gold Star at the Brooklands racetrack, an award given to all competitors lapping this circuit at over 100 mph. It led to the first Gold Star model which was built for many years and, after WWII, turned into one of the most popular sports motorcycles ever made in England.
This BSA M25 Gold Star set a new record when it sold for €24,500 on our Motorcycle auction in 2018
The auctioned bike is a truly exceptional piece as one of the six M24 units that were built for the last London's Olympia Motor Show celebrated before the war broke out in 1939. Fully restored and in perfect working order, it came from a large private collection in Belgium and was offered up for auction by a Dutch trader. This motorcycle reached an impressive final bid of €24,500 (placed by a Belgian buyer) at the end of the auction, which was a real world record for a BSA Gold Star.
