How to find the perfect sunglasses to fit your face

Do you think sunglasses never look good on you? Our in-house fashion expert Clementine is here to help. She's put together this easy guide on how to find the perfect pair of sunglasses that fit the shape of your face. Read on to discover which designer sunglasses she recommends for your face shape and style!

Determining your face shape

The first step in finding the perfect sunglasses to fit your face is determining your face shape. This can be done in 3 simple steps. First, find the widest part of your face: the forehead, cheekbones, jaw, or possibly they’re all equal. Next, observe your jaw shape: is it rounded, pointed or square? Finally, determine the length of your face. Now it’s time to use this information to determine your face shape and find the perfect pair of sunglasses. Our in-house fashion expert put together this guide with some of her suggestions for finding the perfect sunglasses to fit your face that you can find at auction.

The first step in finding the perfect sunglasses to fit your face is determining your face shape

Square face

Faces which are angular, equally wide as long and have a squared jaw shape are considered square shaped. The best sunglasses for square-shaped faces are ones that will soften the strong natural lines of the face and make the face appear longer. Celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Keira Knightley, David Beckham and Brad Pitt are famously square-faced. Our in-house fashion expert, Clementine, recommends shapes like this pair of cat-eye sunglasses from Tiffany & Co. for the ladies and this pair of stunning two-tone Cartier sunglasses for the gentlemen.

Round face

Round faces are equally long as wide and have a rounded jaw. For round-faced people, such as Emma Stone and Leonardo DiCaprio, angular sunglasses are recommended. Angular sunglasses will balance the smooth lines and elongate the face. Clementine's recommendation? This pair of angular Versace sunglasses will do the trick for both men and women.

Long or oblong face
As the name may suggest, long or oblong-shaped faces are longer than they are wide. Like rectangular face shapes, the forehead, cheekbones and jaw are equally wide, but the difference is that long or oblong face shapes have a rounded chin. Celebrities with a long shaped face include Alexa Chung and Ben Affleck. Larger sunglasses work very well on this face shape. These large, vintage sunglasses by Yves Saint Laurent would look stunning on anyone with a long or oblong face shape.

Diamond face
Those whose cheekbones are the widest part of the face and a pointed chin have a diamond-shaped face, just like Johnny Depp or Madonna. Angular frames with high temples such as cat-eye sunglasses will complement this face shape perfectly. Clementine's recommendation is this pair of Miu Miu sunglasses for the diamond shaped faces.

Heart face
The two distinct features of heart-shaped faces are a widow’s peak and a pointed chin. Just like the shape of a heart, the face narrows near the bottom, so the forehead and cheekbones will be wider than the jaw. Celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Gosling have a heart-shaped face. Rounder shaped sunglasses will soften the features of a heart-shaped face. This pair of Cazal sunglasses will achieve this nicely.

Triangle face
When the jaw is wider than the cheekbones and forehead, the face is triangle shaped, just like Minnie Driver and Keith Urban. Cat-eye sunglasses and other strong brow-lined sunglasses compliment triangle-shaped faces, like this pair of Miu Miu sunglasses seen at our Fashion Eyewear auction.

Oval face
Oval face shaped are the most common and the one to make others jealous because nearly everything works for this shape. Oval-faced celebrities include George Clooney and Katy Perry. The cheekbones will be the widest part of the face, the face will be slightly longer than it is wide and the jaw line will be rounded. Although nearly every shape will look outstanding on an oval face, Clementine has 2 suggestions. This pair of Fendi FF 0224/S sunglasses and this pair of Gucci oversized sunglasses.
