Decorating has traditionally involved polishing, sanding and buffing away the parts of a piece of furniture that might even hint that it was mass produced. Rather than a one-off piece, loving crafted. Industrial design, however, is all about the raw and the unfinished. Which is why we've selected four, essential items for embracing this rough and ready aesthetic.
All items are or have been in auction at Catawiki
1. Industrial lamps
One of our favourite ways to add a little touch of industrial to any home, is by adding some factory-inspired lighting. There are so many great options: from vintage stage or theatre lights, to scissor lamps and hanging industrial lamps.
2. Factory furniture
This is where the fun begins. Think school lockers as cupboards, vintage wooden desks, railway clocks, aeroplane trolleys as a side table, plywood lounge chairs and rustic furnishings.
3. Wall art
The majority of industrial decor comes in neutral shades, leaving room for a nice splash of colour on the walls. Street and urban art is an obvious way to go, offering a contemporary style that enhances the unfinished ambience of the space. And you can always make an impact by choosing colourful, modern art, or perhaps a framed vintage poster.

4. Oriental rugs
Another way to avoid an industrial room becoming too cold is by combining warm colours and soft materials. The perfect way to do this is by adding oriental rugs. These intricate, brightly threaded rugs often include colours that are complimentary to an industrial palette, and they bring a touch of luxury to what can be quite an austere aesthetic.
