Insider's Guide to Watch Etiquette: How to Wear a Watch the Alternative Way

Written by Hazel | 6th July 2018

More than just a way of telling the time, a watch can be a statement piece, an understated touch of class, and an extension of the wearer. The epitome of elegance, the right watch can make all the difference in the way you look and feel about yourself. But why should you have to wear a watch in the classic way? In this insider's guide to watch etiquette, we dive into some alternative ways to wear your watch and examine some fascinating examples of watches specifically designed to be worn in a way that breaks from the norm. Keep reading to find out everything you ever wanted to know about wearing a watch…the alternative way.

Classic vs. alternative ways to wear a watch

Of course, the classic way to wear a watch is strapped to your wrist with the face of the piece positioned just above your wrist bone, fastened snugly so the strap neither slides on your arm nor leaves marks on your skin. But with the ever growing interest in men’s and women’s wrist watches with large faces, it’s becoming more and more common to wear a watch on the inside of the wrist, so that the time can be read when your palm is facing upwards. There can be many benefits to wearing a watch in this alternative style; it can help prevent the watch from being damaged, it can be easier to read the time in different situations and frankly, it just looks eye-catchingly unconventional!

Which wrist is correct?

Right or left hand? Which wrist is the correct one…and which is the alternative one? James Bond, possibly one of the most famous wristwatch fans there is, can always be seen wearing his watch on his left hand. In fact, a 2015 online poll found that 59% of participants wear their wristwatch on their left hand. So why is this? It’s commonly thought that you should wear your watch on your non-dominant wrist, simply because this makes it easier to avoid damaging the watch while performing everyday tasks. But ultimately when it comes to which wrist you choose, it’s about your own comfort, style and preference.

A watch made for driving

Some great examples of alternative ways to wear a watch come in the form of two watches by the brand Marvin. This brand of watches dates back to 1850 and can credit their success to their intuitive ability to adapt to modern trends. In the 1930s, Marvin’s motorist watch was created as a direct response to the growing popularity of motor vehicles in the early 20th century. It was designed to be worn on the inside of the wrist so one could comfortably read the time while driving: a great alternative way to wear a watch. Another watch for motorists created that decade was the tyre watch - a timepiece encased in rubber tyre and with the ability to turn in a keyring. Why only wear your watch on your wrist when you can also attach it to your keys? Marvin made this possible.

Beyond the wristwatch

Perhaps you don’t want to wear your watch on your wrist at all. Before there were wrist watches, there was the pocket watch, and today this form of timepiece continues to be a very attractive and classic collectable. A pocket watch can be worn using a fob - a chain or ribbon attaching the watch to your clothing. Fasten a pocket watch to a vest or jacket pocket for a smart, tailored look, or create a modern effect by wearing the watch in your trouser pocket. Professional requirements can be another reason for seeking out an alternative watch style. Nurse watches - otherwise known as fob watches -  are fastened to the breast pocket and are positioned upside down. This makes it convenient for the wearer - usually a medical professional - to view the time when unable to wear a wristwatch.
