Selected By Dr. Ivan Bonchev: Ancient and Medieval Art

Written by Dr. Ivan Bonchev | 6th July 2018

This week we invited special guests Dr. Ivan Bonchev to select a few highlights from our Archaeology auction (6th - 15th July) that will feature pieces coming from his private collection. Take a look at the highlights, meet the seller and find out where you can view the objects in person below.

This Archaeology auction features a wide variety of antiquities - Indus Valley pots and idols, Greek ceramic vessels, Egyptian amulets, Bronze Age swords, Roman and Medieval weaponry, Chinese figurines, wide variety of wearable jewellery and many others. The artefacts have been acquired from old British and European collection, come with a Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee, and can be viewed in person at the seller's gallery in London.

1. Greek Helmet and Acinaces dagger

The Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods saw the active development of warfare and numerous wars between Greeks, Thracians, Macedonians and Persians. Often the Greek city states had to rely on foreign mercenaries for their military campaigns. One of the most fierce and loyal warriors were the Scythians from the northern Black Sea coast area which often took part in the Greek military conflicts. This helmet is a great example of Greek infantry type - protecting the neck and the head with a thick layer of bronze. The helmet is made of a single sheet of bronze, skilfully hammered for a maximum comfort and protection. The acinaces short sword was the most common weapon for the Scythians, forget from high quality steel, deadly in close combat. Dated to the early Hellenistic period, this set of items was most probably owned by a highly skilled professional Scythian soldier who fought in some of The Alexander the Great campaigns in the Balkans or in the Near East. The helmet and dagger are from the collection of a London gentleman, they were originally acquired on the European art Market in the 1950s. They are mounted on a custom-made stand, ideal for display.

2. Ancient Chinese Tang Dynasty Polo Player and Ancient Chinese Ming Dynasty Buddha

This Tang Dynasty polo player and Ming Dynasty buddha are substantial items of extraordinary size and quality, both having most of the original pigment and glazing still completely preserved. These items illustrate the skilled craftsmanship of the Ancient Chinese ceramic workers. Both items are fully TL tested and authenticated.

3. Viking Silver Bracelet with Wolf Head Terminals representing Fenrir

Father of Wolves, Fenrir, is a son of Loki and is destined to kill Odin in the event of Ragnarok. This bracelet is a unique Viking mythological artefact possibly used as an amulet symbol during religious rituals. The item is in fantastic condition, with all details well preserved. It comes with a lifetime Authenticity Guarantee and is in fully suitable for modern wear.

4. Large Chinese Early Qing Dynasty seated Buddha statue

This gilt bronze buddha is seated on cushions, holding Dorje (Vajra) and Ghanta (drillbu) in his hands. He is wearing elaborate robes and jewellery, hair arranged in tight curls rising to a crown. Two snakes are posed on an elaborately decorated stand and all original gems on the statue are still in place. This astonishing piece of Tibetan art is full of power and mysticism! It possesses a vibrant energy and beauty that can be revealed once you have the item in hand. Do not miss this great item.

Meet the seller

Dr. Ivan Bonchev began collecting old coins from an early age at six years old, when he inherited a collection of Russian Imperial roubles from his grandfather. This sparked an ongoing interest in history and collecting old objects. As a teenager he spent much of his time at archaeological excavations, coin fairs, museum visits and courses. Ivan earned his undergraduate degree in Archaeology and Art History at the University of Sheffield, where he received first class honours. His education continued with a Masters and Doctorate in Classical Archaeology & Numismatics at Oxford University, both passed with the highest honours. Five years ago, Ivan founded his own business - Pax Romana Gallery, in Central London. He deals exclusively in authentic Ancient art and numismatics, focusing on the Classical period. He also works for numerous auction houses and large private collectors - curating and inspecting.
