In our Expert’s Choice feature, one of our in-house experts shares their favourite items in auction. This week our photography expert, Daniel Heikens, selects three photographs from our Summer Edition Photography auction (6th-22nd July) that you don’t want to miss.
Hendrik Kerstens combines his personal life, photography and the long tradition of Dutch painters in this iconic portrait of his daughter Paula in 2007. The plastic bag refers to the hand out of plastic bags in shops and creates an ecological statement. The way the bag is worn reminds us of the way women wore their headdresses in the 17th century. In 2008 this photograph won the second prize at the National Portrait Gallery in London with the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2008.
Hendrik Kerstens work can be found in the collections of; 'The Sir Elton John Photography Collection, London, UK', the MoPa Museum of Photographic Art, San Diego, USA and the Museum of Photography in The Hague, NL amongst others.
