Written by the Art Experts | 23rd July 2018
In this weekly feature, our art experts share their favourite works of art from this week’s auctions. Let’s see what modern art expert Anita Helmy and art & photography expert Horst Klover recommend this week (23rd - 29th July).
1. Joe McDermott - Untitled I
Est. value: € 390 - € 440
When looking at the work of Joe McDermott, one can’t help but be reminded of the work of comic artists and, of course, pop art legend Roy Lichtenstein. The difference between the two is that McDermott creates all of his illustrations digitally. When asked where he draws his inspiration from, he says he tries to visualise dramatic or absurd situations or comments and how people would react to it. Untitled I is part of the Gallery Selection auction (13th - 28th July).
2. Andy Warhol - Self portrait (Rosenthal Studio Line)
Est. value: €1,400 - €1,800
Talking about Pop Art, we have to mention Andy Warhol. The guy who knew how to turn soup cans into art, elevated Marilyn Monroe even further into the unreachable icon status and the man that became famous not just as an artist, but as a personality. This week we have one of his self portraits up for auction, also from the Gallery Selection auction (13th - 28th July).
3. Ralph Ueltzhoeffer - Joseph Beuys
Est. value: €1,300 - €1,600
Ralph Ueltzhoeffer is a German concept sculptor, photographer and installation artist. This is one of many of his ‘text portraits’. He uses pictures from the internet and text from Wikipedia and brings them together in these portraits. This portrait of Joseph Beuys, a German Fluxus and one of the most influential artists of the second half of the 20th century, is part of this week’s Gallery Selection auction (13th - 28th July) as well.
4. Richard Orlinski - Panther Clear Crystal
Est. value: €14,000 - €16,000
Orlinski is a contemporary French artists, who wants to make art accessible for everybody. Celebrities such as Rihanna, Harrison Ford and David Guetta are already fans and collectors of his work. The piece we have in auction this week, is a large sculpture, from transparent resin. In this work (number 1 of 8), from the series BORN WILD he gives an ode to the wild animals. He captures their strength and their movement, which can be seen as a timeless design.
5. Luigi Veronesi - Composizione - RA 6
Est. value: €2,200 - €2,500
Luigi Veronesi (1908-1998) was a multi-talented Italian artist. He was a photographer, painter and filmmaker. Like many artists of his time, he started with figurative work, but developed as an abstract painter. Colour and form as an essential of art, not nature. We are very glad that we have one of his oil paintings in the Abstract & Conceptual auction (20th - 29th July).
