By Thomas | 23th October 2018

In our Expert’s Choice feature, one of our experts shares their favourite items currently in auction. This week our Stamps expert, Nicolas Pereira, selects five exceptional items from our stamp auctions for you to enjoy.

1. France 1935/1936 - Dallay 303b Dark Green Blue

In April 1935 a Fr. 1,50 stamp was issued to publicize the Maiden voyage of the Trans-Atlantic steamship ‘Normandie’. Between 1935 and 1936, there were several printings of this stamp made, resulting in four distinctly different shades. You can find the rarest of these shades, the Yvert 300b, and many more in our French Exclusive Stamp auction. Only 25 copies of this stamp are known to exist! The stamp includes a Calves certification and is signed twice.

2. German Reich - Zeppelin flight 'Chicagofahrt 1933' Michel catalogue nos. 496/98

Zeppelin mail topic collecting has been popular since the 1960s. Whether they are stamps or postal history pieces, many stamp collectors see these as the celebrities within philately. In this week’s Exclusive German Stamps auction, you can find a famous German zeppelin stamp set, that was issued on the Chicago flight in 1933.

3. Italy Kingdom 1922 - Kingdom BLP 1 lira with inverted overprint - Sassone N. 12b

The BLP Stamps were first issued in 1921. The letters stand for Busta Lettera Postale, and the stamps were used by War Casualty Charities at a discounted rate. In our Exclusive Italian Stamps Auction of this week you can find a rare 1922 1 Lira stamp, showing an inverted overprint.

4. Greece 1906 - Olympics II series - Karamitsos 189/202

In March 1906, a set of 14 stamps were issued to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the first World Olympic Games of the Modern Era, and to publicize the Olympic Games of 1906. These stamps are engraved on watermarked paper and perforated 13 1/2 or 14. You can find these, and many more in our Exclusive International Stamps auction.

5. Spain 1950 - The Caudillo visit to the Canary Islands First emission Certificate CEM - Edifil 1083A/1083B

In October 1950, General Franco visited the Canary Islands during a tour that included the Spanish Sahara. In honour of the event, a set of two already existing stamps were overprinted (Edifil 1083A/1083B). In total, 21,000 stamps from 1083A and 20,000 from 1083B, were overprinted. There were so few copies that in 1951 more stamps had to be overprinted (80000 and 81000 stamps) to satisfy the stamp collectors’ requirements (Edifil 1088/1089). You can find an astonishing set of these first issues from 1950, including an authenticity certificate, in our Spanish Stamps auction of this week.
