Written by Thomas | 12th December 2018

In our Expert’s Choice feature, one of our experts shares their favourite items currently in auction. This week our coins expert, Eric Toonen, selects several exceptional items from our coins and banknotes auctions for you to enjoy.

1. Palestine - 500 Mils 1939 - Pick 6c

The Palestine Pound was the currency of the British Mandate of Palestine, from 1927 until 1948. It was also used as currency in the State of Israel between 1948 and 1952 before it was replaced with the Israeli Lira. The Palestine pound was divided into 1000 mils and 1000 prutot in Israel, from 1949. The Palestine pound was also the currency of Transjordan until 1949 when it was replaced with the Jordanian Dinar. The currency was still used in the West Bank Governorate of Jordan, until 1950. In this week’s Banknote Auction, you can find this rare 500 Mils from Palestine, that was issued in 1939.

2. Portugal - Monarchy - D. Maria II (1834–1853) - Pataco (40 Réis) 1833 - Lóios - Porto - Scarce – Copper

After the Siege of Oporto, during the liberal revenge in 1833 when D. Maria II reigned, it became necessary to change the monetary house to the convent of Saint Elói, also known as the Lóios, where coin minting was quite reduced. When these coins got first introduced, there was a fear that the public wouldn’t accept them. To ensure the authenticity and the circulation of this new currency, several public explanations have been published describing the authenticity of these coins. In this week’s Portuguese Coins Auction, you can find this scarce Pataco (40 Réis) from 1833.

3. The Netherlands 10 Guilder 1840/37 overstrike - Willem I - Gold

Did you know that the 10 guilder 1840 has a variety made from the 1837 10 guilders? The mint master mark has changed but there was evidence left from the previous mintmark Torch. You can now find this rare variety in this week’s Exclusive NL/BE Coin Auction.

4.  Roman Empire - Tremissis, Aelia Pulcheria (414 - 453 d.C.) Constaninopla – Gold

One of the highlights of this week’s Exclusive Ancient Coin Auction is this gold Tremissis of Aelia Pulcheria, who was the sister of Theodosius II (AD 402-450) and the daughter of Arcadius. Aelia was a proclaimed Augusta in AD 414 and ruled as the guardian of her younger brother Theodosius II. The obverse of this specific Tremissis features her draped and diademed bust, along with the legend ‘AEL PVLCHERIA AVG’ (Aelia Pulcheria Augusta). The reverse bears the legend ‘CONOB✱’ (Constantinopoli Obryzum, or Constantinople, 1/72 pound pure gold) and shows a Latin cross pattée within a wreath. This Tremissis is a rare type, especially in this EF grade.

5. Coins Royal House of Bourbon (Naples & Sicily) Auction

This week, you can discover a specially themed auction dedicated to the Royal House of Bourbon; the royal house that ruled Naples and Sicily for over a century. In this auction, you can find many high-quality coins and some extremely rare pieces. Among these is a stunning 10 Grani Siciliani 1836, of which today only ten pieces are known to exist in the world!
