Expert’s Choice: Eric Toonen Selects the Highlights from This Week's Coin & Banknote Auctions

Written by Thomas | 23rd January 2019

In our Expert’s Choice feature, one of our experts shares their favourite items currently in auction. This week our coins expert, Eric Toonen, selects several exceptional items from our coins and banknotes auctions for you to enjoy.

1. Spain - Fernando VI (1746 - 1759) - 8 escudos - Ceca de Santiago, 1753. Ensayador J. - Gold

In 1728, when Felipe V ruled over Spain, it was ordered that the 8 Escudos coins would be coined with the royal shield on the back, and the effigy of the monarch on the obverse. Up until then, these coins would show a cross instead of the image of the king. Felipe V and his court had adopted the fashion of France, where the Bourbons would wear large and showy wigs. When the image of the king first appeared on the 8 Escudos, these coins were nicknamed ‘Peluconas’, which literally means ‘big wigs’ in Spanish. In this week’s Spanish Coin Auction, is an 8 Escudos from this period in extremely fine condition with remnants of its original shine.

2. France - 100 Francs 1865-A Napoleon III – Gold

Our new Premium French Gold Coin Auction is packed with high-quality coins from different eras. One of the highlights of this auction is a rare 100 Francs 1865-A, that was struck under Napoleon III. This key date has the lowest mintage of the laureate head series with only 1517 minted coins.

3. Roman Empire AV Solidus, Constantius II (A.D. 337 - 361). Rome, A.D. 357 - FELICITAS RO-MANORVM – Gold

The 48th World Money Fair (WMF) starts on 1st February and will take place in Berlin, Germany. The entire Catawiki coin team will be present with our own stand. One of the highlights of this auction is this rare AV Solidus that was minted in Rome in A.D. 357.

4. United States - 20 Dollars 1908 Saint Gaudens - No Motto - NGC MS62 - Gold

In 1909, the text “In God We Trust” was added to the coins and banknotes coming from the United States. In this week’s Gold Coin Auction, you can find this MS62 slabbed 20-dollars 1908 “No Motto” in an NGC capsule.

5. Portugal - Monarquia - D. Luis I (1861-1889) - 2.000 Reis 1875 - Gold
