In our Expert’s Choice feature, one of our experts shares their favourite items currently in auction. This week our Stamp expert, Nicolas Pereira, selects several exceptional items from our stamp and postcard auctions for you to enjoy.
1. Belgium 1851 - Leopold I Medallion 10 centimes - Block of 4 - certificate - OBP / COB 6A
Not often do you come across these Belgium 1851 Leopold I Medallion type stamps, certainly not in multiples. But in this week’s Belgian Stamp Auction is a block of four of these stamps! The stamps are in mint condition and come with a certificate.
2. Netherlands 1905 - Queen Wilhelmina ‘fur collar’ - NVPH 80
It's quite common for kings, queens, presidents, and other rulers to be depicted with their characteristic clothes to distinguish between different stamp sets issued during their ruling period. One great example is this Queen Wilhelmina ‘fur collar’ stamp from 1905, which is currently in our Dutch Stamp Auction. This stamp is in mint condition and shows a good centring.
3. China - People's Republic since 1949 1967 - Thesis of Mao - Unfolded strip with certificate - Michel 966/976
This strip of stamps from the People’s Republic of China is from 1967; from the time that Mao ruled over China. This "Thesis of Mao" set is in MNH condition with unfolded strips and comes with a recent certificate. For further reference please see the Michel Catalogue Nr. 966/976. 4. German Empire 1933/1945 - Collection of mostly wonderful legible cancels
In our Germany Ancient & Classic Stamp Auction is this beautiful collection of cancelled stamps from the German Empire, that were issued in 1933-1945. This collection contains stamps with fantastic cancellation quality and almost all of these are still legible!
5. Spain 1938 - Siege of Madrid. Miniature sheet. CEM certificate - Edifil 760
The Siege of Madrid occurred during the Spanish Civil War, which started in 1936 and ended in 1939. In this week’s Spanish & Portuguese Stamp Auction is this miniature block sheet that was issued in Spain in 1938 to commemorate the defence of Madrid during the siege. The sheet is an overprinted “Aéreo + 5 pts.”, intended for airmail use.
