Looking for the latest trends in interior design? We spoke to Marleen Deiters, our Expert in Design & Decorative Art, to explain what’s trending and why.
“An eclectic interior is popular at the moment”, Marleen points out. Contemporary interior trends show an abundant mix of themes and time periods, but two key styles are in particularly high demand at the moment: Art Nouveau and Art Deco. When it comes to modern interiors, “the styles of Art Nouveau and Art Deco fit in seamlessly.”
Both aesthetics far transcend the home interior realm – adorning architecture, furniture, applied arts, paintings and graphic design all around us. “With Art Nouveau: consider the organic shapes – the omnipresence of nature. And as for Art Deco, how the curve gives way to a more sleek and more symmetrical design.” Objects from these periods are characterised by great quality, remarkable details and rich material choices, which is why they’re such a smart investment: “they’re made with great craftsmanship.”
In her years at Catawiki, a stunning auction piece that left Marleen speechless was a cabinet by the great Art Nouveau artist Louis Majorelle. “A piece of art, of which only a few exist in the world”, she reminisces with a big smile. “We only know of four or five that exist in the world - one of which is in a museum - and we were given the opportunity to auction one. That’s a tremendous honor.”
Inspired to invest in a piece of Art Deco of Art Nouveau? Marleen’s straightforward advice is to trust your gut feeling: “Whether it's a purchase of a special object, or an enhancement of your interior. Or perhaps the start of a collection. Above all: follow your heart.”
