How to find the perfect dress watch

Written by Jenna | May 2024

Do you love the subtle sophistication of a well-crafted dress watch? You’re not the only one. These classic timepieces are like whispers of elegance and precision – a characteristic not lost on Jamie Brindle, our in-house Expert in Watches. We sat down with Jamie to hear his expertise on dress watches and why we need to have one.

Getting started: how to recognise the basics

There are a few basic elements to any dress watch, such as a leather strap. Traditionally, this style of watch has a plain white dial, but “those rules have relaxed,” Jamie mentions. “These days it’s not uncommon to see a calendar on the dial as well.”

The size of the dial is usually smaller than other watch styles. The diameter typically ranges from 36-41 mm, and for vintage watches, it might be 33-41 mm.

Plainly put, the simplicity of a dress watch reflects a timeless elegance, with beauty often revealed in the intricate details when examined up close.

Form vs. function: when to wear a dress watch

"A dress watch is meant for formal occasions," says Jamie, “they’re perfect for dinner parties, weddings and black tie events.” Given the decorum of these occasions, a dress watch is fitting.

Unlike the more popular trends, such as sports watches, a dress watch is not a statement watch. These subtle timepieces have an understated beauty and are designed to enhance the wearer's overall appearance without stealing the spotlight.

Choosing the perfect dress watch

If you’re hoping your favourite watch brand has a classic model, you’re in luck. Almost every watch brand offers a dress watch. Whether you're on a tight budget or looking to make an investment, there is a dress watch for every taste and price range.

There are five watches that Jamie recommends for the perfect dress watch.

1. Affordable elegance: Seiko Presage

2. The classic look: Hamilton Valiant

3. The vintage choice: Omega Pie Pan Dial

4. Expert’s choice: Patek Philippe Calatrava 5119r

5. A gift-worthy timepiece: FB Journe

Vintage dress watches: a quintessential timepiece

For something truly timeless, you can’t go wrong with a vintage watch. These cherished artefacts tell more than time, they tell a story. They convey heritage and a sense of tradition. Considering their historical value and charm, “these watches are a great investment,” Jamie encourages.

Dress watches are forever

While dress watches might not be the trendiest at the moment, Jamie predicts a lasting legacy. "If you look forward 100 years, dress watches will be more highly regarded than today’s trendy sports watches," he confidently asserts. “They’re classic,” Jamie says confidently, “they’re not subject to fashion trends.”
