Few brands evoke the same level of prestige as Rolex. Renowned for its unparalleled craftsmanship, precision engineering and iconic design, Rolex is synonymous with sophistication and status.
What is less known about these timepieces is that each model has a story. These stories cemented their status among pop icons, after whom many of the Rolex models themselves have been named.
Hear from Catawiki Watch Expert, Joaquín Fernández Cébrian, as he explains what makes some of the most popular Rolex watches so iconic.
In 1926, Rolex made the first ‘waterproof wrist chronometer’. Initially made for divers, the iconic watch became popular after it was worn by Sean Connery in the 007 James Bond film, Dr. No.
Now, the must-have Rolex for any potential beginner, this model is a staple in the world of collectors.
Rolex Submariner
In the early 1960s, the chronograph wasn't popular – mainly because OMEGA was selected by NASA as part of each astronaut’s space kit during the first journey to the moon. But, then Paul Newman started to wear the Rolex Daytona. And everything changed. By the 1980s and 1990s it became a symbol of success. These days, the idolised watch is harder to come by, with long waiting lists, requests from authorised dealers and watches selling at four times the retail price.

This Rolex was designed initially for pilots who found themselves adjusting the time on their watches too often. The GMT-Master made it possible for them to keep time for multiple time zones. The model became even more popular with the release of the red and blue bi-coloured bezel, affectionately named “Pepsi” by collectors. Additional fan names followed, including “Coke” in black and red, and “Batman” in blue and black.

Rolex Datejust / Rolex Day-Date 'President'
Telling more than just time, both models became popular for their revolutionary date-changing mechanism (Datejust) and day/date display (“President”). The Datejust is known for its distinctive cyclops lens – a magnifying glass over the date window, which enhances readability. The Rolex Day-Date quickly gained the nickname "President" because it became associated with prominent world leaders, including several U.S. Presidents.

Rolex Milgauss
Originally made for scientists, engineers and electricians, the sapphire green glass of this Rolex is what sets it apart from other models. This awesome timepiece also has a second inner case to avoid magnetism affecting the calibre.

Rolex Explorer I/II
The Explorer was made famous by Edmund Hillary – the first man to climb Everest. An historic feat, Hillary made it all the way to the summit with his trusty Rolex Explorer on his wrist.
While the Explorer I is a more simplified version, the Explorer II was designed with extra function with GMT double time.
