2nd half of the 20th century - Nice condition
BAKOTA reliquary guardian figurine, Gabon ; Wood ; Plated metal ; Ancient patina. Height: 52 cm ; Object in very nice condition.
These type of reliquaries were used for the conservation of the mortuary remains of ancestors of high lineage, placed in baskets topped by specific sculptures which, somehow, played the role of guardians of these relics.
The most important decisions of the clan were taken, in the exclusive presence of the initiates, during ceremonies in which the reliquaries were exhibited and used.
Among the KOTA, these figurines reached a high degree of amazing stylisation and abstraction: reduced to the shoulders and “arms” which are surmounted by a large face, which is either concave (feminine) or convex (masculine).
They present a specificity which is less clear within the rest of the art of Black Africa: copper and brass, in the shape of hammered plates, are systematically and widely included in the composition of all these objects. This contributes to the fact that they are sought by amateurs of African art.
