Early to mid-XXth - collected in 1950 - good condition
This tender Bene Lulua Figure is quite big for a figure of that area.
H=31 cm wood.
The Bene Lulua statuary is seldom and mportant. Interestingly, scarification illustrated on this big Lulua figure , even though the Lulua did not scar after the 19th century. This figure represented some type of charm or protective statue; the scarification on the neck and body have a "life" meaning, while the large head has a strong emotional expression. It is thought that the flat atop the head is symbolizing power while the short arms with stout legs are symbols of virility and power., just like an animal It is likely this figure dates to the early 20th century, its gentility face and energy suggests it was very personal, seldom and special statuette
