Large antique marionette puppet – Burma (Myanmar) – Circa 1920
A large antique male marionette puppet from Burma (Myanmar) with polychrome painted wood. Due to age, a lot of the paint has worn off. Besides that, the puppet is in good condition and usable. A lot of attention went into the clothes: the dance costume is made of painted buffalo leather and hemmed with a velvet cord. The costume is finished with small metal plates, mirrors, pieces of glass and large pieces of facet cut glass on the chest and shoulders. The trousers underneath the dance costume has been replaced at some point in time, the rest of the clothes are original. The puppet probably depicts Rama, a hero and son of a God. The original polychrome painting of the face has partially worn off due to age. Nevertheless, the face has retained its friendly appearance. The outer clothing underneath the dance costume is made of light green silk and is also richly set with metal plates. The headdress, made of light red silk and painted buffalo leather, is finished with rows of small metal beads. The length of the puppet itself is 74 cm. Its weight is 1,250 grams. The puppet will be shipped by registered post, carefully packaged.
