Hugo de Groot [=Grotius] - Nederlandtsche Jaerboeken en Historien sedert het jaer MDLV tot het jaar MDCIX; met de belegering der Stadt Grol en den aenkleven des jaers MDCXXVII; alsook het Tractaet van de Batavische nu Hollandtsche Republyk en de Vrye Zeevaert, met aenteeckeningen voorts met het leven des Schrijvers, twee volomen Registers, en veele koopere Platen verciert alles vertaelt door Joan Goris - Amsterdam, Weduwe van Jannes van Someren, Abraham Wolfgangk, en Hendrik en Dirk Boom, 1681 - (44), 592, (76), 20, (6), 74 pp. - Full-parchment binding - approx. 33 × 20 cm. Condition: Parchment binding damaged on the spine, particularly at the top. Several plates are missing but otherwise in very good antiquarian condition. ¶ First edition of the translation by Joannes Goris of Grotius' (1583-1645) history of the Dutch Republic (1st Latin Edition 1657). It contains a preface by Joannes Blaeu, a biography of Grotius, jurist, philosopher, diplomat and publicist, and his account of the Siege of Groenlo (with map). Also included are his “Verhandelingh van de oudtheit der Batavische, nu Hollandtsche Republyke” and the treatise “Vrye See, of Verhandelingh van het reght dat de Ingeseetenen der Vereenighde Nederlanden hebben om in Indien te handelen”. In addition to the engraved title print and the portrait of the author (by Adriaan van de Venne after M. Miereveld) this book contains a title engraving, a writers portrait and 26 copper engravings including some on 2 pages (one of which depicts the famous assassination of William the Silent by Balthasar Gérard!). These are all 19 portraits and some historical prints.
