A beautiful, original 1650 hand coloured map of SE Asia, focused on Indonesia and the Spice Islands.
Size: 39 x 50 cm. (on sheet: 46 x 55.7 cm.).
Condition: Very good condition. Repaired split to lower centrefold. Slight browning of centrefold. Some show-through of text. Slight staining on verso. Verso: French text. Hand coloured.
Important early map of Southeast Asia and the Philippines, as well as a landmark map in the early Dutch mapping of Australia.
The map provides a fascinating treatment of Southeast Asia and the Philippines, but is perhaps most important as the only Dutch printed map showing the 1606 discoveries of Willem Jansz, who in the ship Duyfken is attributed as making the first recorded European discovery in Australia on Cape York Peninsula.
