Height: 85 cm Large : 26 cm Deep: 28 cm.
Provenance: - Dorotheum, Vienna.
The mask is from the coastal region west of the “Baga”-Conakry.
Those masks were danced, during celebrations related to the cereal cycle, rites of passage or funeral rituals. Their use was banned by Marxist dictator Sekou Toure's government in 1958 and the Nimba corpus collected before this date comprises fifteen pieces. After achieving independence at the end of colonial times (after Touré’s death) the Baga rededicated their forgotten cults. The Nimba-Shoulder-mask is from this period.
