This encrusted Seldom Lagoon Mask-Attie-Ebrie -Yaoure-Ivory Coast Dance mask is representing a beautiful lady, surmounted with a figure of a female spirit , slightly ex-centered. The expression is of great sensitivity, the forehead with an upwards arrow scarification, very fine coiffure nates in half circle.
Wood, crusty patina quite thick in places, nice and old wear inside. Some part of the back missing on the side.

Those masks represent the spiritual power called ‘Yu’ and are usually worn on two occasions:
For Ye celebrations which aim to purify the village after a death , and to help the deceased’s soul to find eternal rest.
For Yo ceremonies, during which black masks appear used for a large number of ceremonies.
