Sergei Mavrodi is the Russian who set up the largest pyramid scam in Russia’s history in the early 1990s.
Hundreds of thousands of Russians lost their money in 1994 when Mavrodi‘s pyramid construction collapsed. They lost a total amount of 1.5 billion euros.
A pyramid scam is based on a group of people who continue to invest more money in a fictional product. 
MMM "notes" are a remnant of one of the largest pyramid schemes in history led by the MMM Corporation. The man behind this misery was Sergei Mavrodi who was also on the ‘note’. 

Sergei Panteleevich Mavrodi (Russian: Серге́й Пантелеевич Мавроди; born 11 August 1955) is a Russian criminal and a former deputy of the State Duma. He is the founder of the МММ series of pyramid schemes.
