Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, Bocheltje or Ahasverus*. 1926. Woodcut 234 x 278 mm on Japanese paper, page size 34 x 45 cm. The woodcut is signed in pencil and the print run shows 60/100. However, this edition was never appeared, it was largely lost. Jonieke van Es mentioned the print in her oeuvre catalogue (2005) under H 127. Van Es knows 5 edition in total only 19 copies (!). This print is in mint condition, has full margins and has never been framed.
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (Amsterdam, 6 June 1868 – Auschwitz, 11 February 11 1944) is seen as the most important Dutch graphic artist in the first quarter of the 20th century. His graphic oeuvre includes 348 etchings, woodcuts and lithographs, all described In the beautiful and now rare oeuvre catalogue. In addition, he was an important art animator who designed for ‘Het Binnenhuis’ and was a great teacher who influenced a lot of artists. His most important pupil was Maurits Escher. Work by Jessurun de Mesquita is located in, among other locations, the national museum in Amsterdam, in the ‘Stedelijk Museum’ of Amsterdam, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and in the Jewish Museum. Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was arrested and whisked away with his family early 1944. Soon after, Maurits Escher was able to salvage some of his work from the abandoned studio.
* Ahasverus is the name of the legendary wandering Jew who supposedly treated Jesus harshly on his way to Golgotha, which resulted in him being condemned on the day of judgment to restless roam the world.
