His graphic oeuvre includes 348 etchings, woodcuts and lithographs, all described In the beautiful and now rare oeuvre catalogue. In addition, he was an important art animator who designed for ‘Het Binnenhuis’ and was a great teacher who influenced a lot of artists. His most important pupil was Maurits Escher. Work by Jessurun de Mesquita is located in, among other locations, the national museum in Amsterdam, in the ‘Stedelijk Museum’ of Amsterdam, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and in the Jewish Museum. Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was arrested and whisked away with his family early 1944. Soon after, Maurits Escher was able to salvage some of his work from the abandoned studio.

* Ahasverus is the name of the legendary wandering Jew who supposedly treated Jesus harshly on his way to Golgotha, which resulted in him being condemned on the day of judgment to restless roam the world.
