Two 18th century copper engravings showing the north western part of Russia and Nova Zembla.
Both maps are produced by Bellin for Prevost d'Exiles influential travel book, L'Histoire Generale des Voyages.
1. Carte des Pais Habités par les Samojedes et Ostiacs… (1750)
Dimensions: 15,8 x 24 cm. (on sheet: 25 x 28 cm.).
Condition: very good condition. Clean paper with ample margins and watermark. Folds as published (fold out maps from a book). Some light browning around the edges. Text in French. Reverse side blank.
An interesting map of north western Russia and Nova Zembla. The name in the title cartouche reference to the Samoyedic and Ostyak peoples of Siberia.
2. Partie de al Mer Glaciale...La Nouvelle Zemble et... (1758)
Dimensions: 21,3 x 24,5 cm. (on sheet: 23,8 x 36,2 cm.).
Condition: very good condition. Clean paper with ample margins and watermark. Folds as published (fold out maps from a book). Text in French. Reverse side blank.
An interesting map of Nova Zembla and surrounding areas. With details on the eastern tip of Nova Zembla of the place where the stranded Dutch sailors under Willem Barentsz spent the winter at the end of the 16th century (´Het Behouden Huys´).
