¶ Johan Herman Isings (31 July 1884 - 19 August 1977) was a famous Dutch artist and illustrator. He is often mentioned in the same breath with Jetses, who, just like Isings, made the famous school posters for Wolters Noordhof.

Isings is particularly known for the historical watercolours - including 43 school posters - he made for Wolters Noordhof between 1910 and 1970, depicting highlights of Dutch history. In addition, he also illustrated several hundreds of books, including school books, children's books, novels and children’s Bibles. He was the teacher of, among others, the illustrators Henk Poeder and E.J. Veenendaal.
Isings is considered one of the most important historical painters of the Netherlands.

Among the school posters he made for Wolters-Noordhoff are “De Noormannen voor Dorestad”, “De overwintering op Nova Zembla” and “De Rijksdag te Worms”. In addition, Isings made illustrations for children's books by, among others, W.G. van de Hulst Sr. and Willem de Mérode.
