Jan Korthals (1916-1972) - Stadsgezicht Amsterdam
The artist Johannes Korthals (Jan) was born in 1916 in Amsterdam. Korthals, among others, made paintings and watercolours of cityscapes in an impressionist style. Jan Korthals was mostly known for his striking portraits and for his atmospheric cityscapes and landscapes.
His cityscapes of Amsterdam, in which a brown tone is predominantly present, remind us mostly of Breitner. In these works, the influence of his uncle and tutor Marie Henry Mackenzie is recognisable. His uncle was a student of Breitner for a relatively long period. Mackenzie had great respect for Breitner, this he definitely passed on to his nephew. The offered work clearly shows this infuence.
He also liked to visit Paris where he made many lively ink drawings, which he later used as fundaments for properly performed oil paintings in his studio in Amsterdam. His Parisian street corners are typical; some blue in the shadows, the red of the girls blouse and a light green store canopy, these comprise the useful colour accents in a transient street scene.
Jan Korthals is most known for his paintings and watercolours of cityscapes. A monograph was published about the work of Jan Korthals.
