Provenance: Modou Sow, who worked for the Berg-en-Dal Africa Museum.
Size: H=23 cm
The Dan people live in the forests in the western part of Ivory Coast and eastern Liberia and made various masks characterized by a concave face, a pointed chin, a protruding mouth, an upturned nose and a high-domed forehead.
Those mask where used to initiate young man to adulthood.
Today they are used principally in performance for tourists, the various masks had traditional functions ranging from entertainment to initiation to social control.
