Very well preserved Polychromed Wood Sculpture - Incredible art sculpture representing the Virgin and Child called "Sedes sapientiae." - Strikingly for the 12th/13th Century A.C.
A 11,6" (29,50cm) tall carving of the Madonna & Child. It was carved from an old beam of some sort. The back is flat and the front is rounded. I cannot find a signature. Braught back from Catalonia as a memory by the daughter os a sculturer who mostly made statues en paintings for churches.
Design: End 14th century, early 15th century.
Mid 12th century, the Virgin takes place in churches in majesty, serving as throne to her son Jesus, called "Sedes Sapientiae" or Seat of Wisdomand the designated “Theotokos,” Mother of God. She presents the Christ Child, sitting on her left knee, holding him with her left hand. The Virgin wears a long blue dress, long sleeves revealing her knees under the cloth and hiding the feet, her shoulders covered with a red coat. - The Child Jesus also wears a long tunic, The Virgin, straight nose, tiny mouth, is wearing a long veil placed high on the forehead. - The Child himself is revealing hair.
He sits hieratic and frontal, facing the faithful, typical 12th century.
