The Ifé art is the only African art with anthropomorphic or zoomorphic representations with such a realism.
The leopard is a royal symbol of the Abomey Realm (Danhomé in Fon language).
According to the legend, the dynasties of the Southern kingdoms of the Republic of Benin originate from Tado, a city located in the current Togo and were created by a mythical couple: the princess Aligbonon from Tado and a leopard.
Leopards were placed by couple on the altars of the king’s ancestors.
Often they were aquamaniles.
During ceremonies, they were filed with water, through the hole placed on the top of their head.
Then, the water flowed through their nostrils.
The Oba had living leopards in his court and employed a guard entirely dedicated to the care of these animals.
