Frederick II or Frederick the Great, colloquially also old Fritz (* 24 January 1712 in Berlin; † 17 August 1786 in Potsdam) became king in 1740 and King of Prussia in 1772 as well as reigning electoral prince of Brandenburg in 1740. His ancestry lies in the Hohenzollern dynasty.
He led three Silesian Wars against Austria that resulted in Silesia joining German dualism. After the last of these wars, the Seven Years' Year from 1756 to 1763, Prussia was established as the fifth major power in the European pentarchy next to France, Great Britain, Austria and Russia.
