In 2007 STOT21stCplanB (aka L-13's Steve Lowe and Adam Wood) started making the Not Banksy paintings which were essentially a provocative, satirical response to not so much Banksy himself, but to the hordes of hyped up opportunist speculators who bought his work in the hope they could make some fast money.
The first pieces were on pound shop canvasses using stencils intended for decorating children’s bedrooms: hopping bunnies and chicks etc. The works were given politicized titles with a fake Banksy stenciled signature and sold in small editions for £25-50 each. They were immensely popular (helped by the rumour that it was actually Banksy making them), and more editions followed, each time stretching the credulity further in terms of edition sizes and variations in an attempt to test (and wear out) the interest of the people buying them.
The last canvas piece did the trick. It was a series of 11 paintings in editions of 100. The first one was a bunny with 10 carrots, then a bunny with 9 carrots, and so on until the last edition was a bunny with no carrots. After that STOT21stCplanB ceased making Not Banksy's, but returned in 2008 with a series on cardboard which were much more a pastiche of Banksy’s stencil work using his rats and chimps - these are some examples and proofs from the L-13 archive.
