17th and 18th century copper engravings of the Middle East: map of the area and engraving of the port of Tel Aviv /Jaffa
1. Jaffa (1686)
Dimensions: 12,5 x 16,5 cm on full page of 30,6 x 18,7 cm.
Condition: Very good condition. Only very light age browning, clean paper, ample margins (full page), hand colored, text about the city and the region in Dutch on both sides.
View of the port of the city of Jaffa (nowadays in the outskirts of Tel Aviv) by the famous Dutch geographer Olfert Dapper. Published in Amsterdam in 1686 in his book ´Syrie en Palestyn´.
Dapper was born in a working-class district of Amsterdam, in around 1635. He was baptised at the Lutheran church in January 1636. In May 1658, he enrolled at Utrecht University and two years later was signing himself "doctor medicinæ", although there is no evidence that he ever received any medical training.
Following a growing publishing trend in Amsterdam, Dapper was just over thirty when he embarked on the geographical research that was to occupy him for the rest of his life. He threw himself into a vast undertaking, tackling first Africa (1668), then China (1670), Persia and Georgia (1672), Asia (1677) Arabia (1680) and the Greek Archipelago in 1688

Condition: Very good condition. Clean paper with watermark and ample margins. Folds as published. Reverse side blank.
