Technique: Etching
Year: 18th century, 17th century
Condition: In good condition
Title of artwork: Rhinoceros and other animals of Africa
Signature: Signed
Artist: Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708)

22,00 x 29 cm on plate border
With full plate border in a larger sheet of laid paper with margins.
Good impression with nice plate tone. Tear bottom left going inside the image.

Rhino, elephant, lion... Flying fish and some other very strange animals.
All pointed out in the text line in French and Dutch on top.

This plate from 'Les Indes orientales et occidentales, et autres lieux.' was published by Pieter van der Aa in Leiden in 1710. The work is extremely rare. It was later re-used in the very scarse: 'La galerie agreable du monde (...). Tome premier des Indes Orientales.', published by P. van der Aa, Leyden, c. 1725. It is said that only 100 copies were printed. Ref: Koeman Aa9; Phillips 2780 note.

Painter, sculptor, medal maker, goldsmith, etcher, and publisher. Born in Amsterdam, a nephew of the painter Pieter de Hoogh. In 1668 in Paris, from 1687 in Haarlem. Opened drawing school in 1688. Propagandist for William of Orange. He was a important renewer of pictural art revolting against the dull French style of his period.
